Boriken Resistance Flag
Boriken Resistance Flag
There's a door in Old San Juan that was painted with the original Sky Blue Bandera, well known by tourists and locals. On July 4th, 2016, the door was painted over by 4 women in an anonymous artist collective known as La Puerta.
This was done as an act of resistance in response to the PROMESA act signed by Obama. This act gave US appointed officials complete control over the island's laws and finances. Activists on the island and amongst the diaspora were heavily against this. Hurricane Maria hit months later and thousands died from preventable causes due to the colonizers ineptitude.
This version of the flag has been adopted amongst the island and the diaspora as a unifying reminder of resilience and renewed hope of independence. We will not stop fighting back until Borikén is liberated alongside all others currently under oppression.
